Free Pattern: Dopefish

The Dopefish first appearance was in the PC-game "Commander Keen" back in the nineties and made some cameo's in other games as well.


I really loved that game and decided that my first written pattern should be this cute little guy.

Work in spirals, do not join rounds.

BODY (with green)
Rnd 1: 5sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: 2sc in every st (10)
Rnd 3: *2sc in st, 1sc * repeat (15)
Rnd 4: *2sc in st, 2sc * repeat (20)
Rnd 5: *2sc in st, 3sc * repeat (25)
Rnd 6: *2sc in st, 4sc* repeat (30)
Rnd 7: *2sc in st, 5sc* repeat (35)
Rnd 8: *2sc in st, 6sc* repeat (40)
Rnd 9 - 18: 40 sc
Rnd 19: *sc in 2st (dec), 6sc* repeat (35)
Rnd 20: *sc in 2st (dec), 5sc* repeat (30)
Rnd 21: *sc in 2st (dec), 4sc* repeat (25)
Rnd 22: *sc in 2st (dec), 3sc* repeat (20)

At this point, pull tail inside and stuff body

Rnd 23: *sc in 2st (dec), 2sc* repeat (15)
Rnd 24: *sc in 2st (dec), 1sc* repeat (10)
Rnd 25: *sc in 2st (dec)* repeat (5)
Fasten off and weave in end.


TAIL FIN (with green)
Rnd 1: 5sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: 2sc in every st (10)
Rnd 3: *2sc in st, sc* repeat (15)
Rnd 4: *2sc in st, 2sc* repeat (20)
Rnd 5: *2sc in st, 3sc* repeat (25)
Rnd 6: *2sc in st, 4sc* repeat (30)
Rnd7: *2sc in st, 5sc* repeat (35)

Fold circel in half and allign st from both sides. Sc sides together.
Fasten off and leave tail to attach to body


DORSAL FIN (with green)
Rnd 1: 4sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: *sc, 2sc in st* repeat (6)
Rnd 3: *2sc, 2sc in st* repeat (8)
Rnd 4: *3sc, 2sc in st* repeat (10)
Rnd 5: 4sc, 3sc in st, 4sc, 2sc in st (13)

Fasten off and leave tail to attach to body.

SIDE FINS (make 2) (with green)
Rnd 1: 4sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: *sc, 2sc in st* repeat (6)
Rnd 3: *2sc, 2sc in st* repeat (8)
Rnd 4: *3sc, 2sc in st* repeat (10)

Fold together and sew tight. Fasten off and leave tail. The base (where the magic ring started) is sown to body.


EYES (with white)
Left eye:
Rnd 1: 5sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: *2sc in st* repeat (10)
Rnd 3: *2sc in st, sc* repeat (15)

Fasten off and leave tail for attachment to body and the other eye.

Right eye: (with white)
Rnd 1: 4sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: *2sc in st* repeat (8)
Rnd 3: *2sc in st, sc* repeat (12)

Fasten off and you may weave in ends, or leave tail for attachment to body and the other eye.
Sew eyes together and stitch/embroider the pupils using black.


TEETH (make 2) (with white)
Rnd 1: 8 ch
Rnd 2: 7 sc, 1ch turn work
Rnd 3: 7 sc

Fold teeth and close sides. Leave tail for attachment to body.


MOUTH (optional) (with green)
Rnd 1: 4 sc in magic ring
Rnd 2: *2sc in st* repeat (8)
Rnd 3, *2sc in st, sc* repeat (12)
Rnd 4: *2sc in st, 2sc* repeat (16)

Fold circle and allign stitches. Sc sides together. Leave tail for attachment to body.

Sew tail- and dorsal-fin to body. Allign eyes and sew to body. Allign teeth and sew to body. Allign side fins and sew to body. Optional: place mouth right of teeth (teeth may be overlapping ) and sew to body.

    I'm making this. I laughed when I found the Dopefish in the Quake series. Especially in Q3 when I flew off a level.

    I found dopefish in a fb game called ravenwood, and it plays eat your veggies when you go to the tutorial land or whatever, lol
